| Memorial Day Weekend
For many Americans, Memorial Day means just the beginning of summer, barbecue time, picnic fun and total relaxation for a long weekend. Falling on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day gives a three-day long weekend, which is a looked-forward-to weekend for the country's umpteen unrestrained souls. To them, Memorial Day weekend is the perfect time to have their fling and get the summer fun on. Bad news is that in the hype and hoopla of Memorial Day weekend activities, the true significance of Memorial Day is easily forgotten. Memorial Day, a day which was originally conceived to venerate the nation's thousands of combat veterans has, now, become a means to the summer weekend activities.
On the Memorial Day weekend, thousands plop on their summer getaways to enjoy the summer sun and some leisure pleasure! Others hit the beach for tons of tan-fun on the sands or some cool surfing sport. Still others move to the mountains and brace up to scale newer heights of thrill and excitement. And the rest seek it best to bundle up at their homes for three long holidays. Of course, there's nothing like relaxing in the cozy comforts of one's 'home sweet home'! Memorial Day weekend gives Americans three consecutive days off from school, college or work and they try to make the best of it in whatever ways they can.
Memorial Day officially marks the beginning of summer, and with that it uncorks the summer holiday celebrations too. It is quite common in the country to arrange for Memorial Day weekend picnics with lots of games and grub. Barbecue tops the list when it comes to Memorial Day weekend menu. The sizzling hot barbecues are must-haves for every American, come summer and come Memorial Day weekend.
Guzzling barrels of beer is yet another very common Memorial Day weekend activity. People throng the pubs and spend hours over mugs of chilled beers and getting wilder to wildest in their pursuit of a long weekend fun. That's may be, their own way of raising a toast to the nation's war heroes, who knows? And that's may be, America's neo-patriots' patriotism redefined! Not an impossibility!
Fireworks are also very much a part of the Memorial Day weekend. Brilliantly magnificent fireworks light up the night sky as a mark of honor to those who laid down their lives fighting for America. The fireworks also signify the effusion in the spirit of celebrations that go on an upsurge with the Memorial Day weekend.
Thus, in recent times, the Memorial Day weekend is one which is full of fun, food, friends, family and fireworks! All this excitement is fine, as long as it doesn't undermine the real significance of the day. Have fun, for sure; but spare a moment to pray for the courageous souls too. Pay your tributes to those who fought for the nation and undertook all challenges with their indomitable spirits and unflinching perseverance.
