| Halloween Customs And Traditions
There are no rigid customs and traditions to the Halloween holiday. All that’s fun and excitable are of course passed down traditionally through generations. People across the globe have sometimes modified or improved on age-old Halloween customs and traditions to make the festival even more fun and joyful. From invitations to decorations, from games to grub, from going out with friends to playing pranks—each aspect of Halloween celebration is a tradition now. And all these are followed more out of desire than out of duty. Therein lies the peppiness of Halloween customs and traditions. Listed below are some of the commonest and freakiest Halloween customs and traditions:
- It’s definitely not customary, but a traditional joy to deck up in groovy Halloween costumes and gross out one’s friends, folks and sweetheart on the Halloween night. For generations now, people love to spend quite a fortune on getting the right costumes for the holiday. And the stores witness record sales every year. The practice of wearing costumes on Halloween has its roots in the Celtic tradition of taking a guise to scare the ghosts away.
- Decorating one’s home on October 31 is another very popular Halloween tradition and quite frightfully fun at that too ! Children craft out chic Halloween-themed designs to hang in the walls or fringe the window-frames. Bigger children make funky Halloween table-mats, candle-stands and streamers with Autumn leaves and many more. Lighted Jack O’ Lanterns are traditionally put up on window-sills and on front porches to add a typical Halloween touch to the home. One may also find items for Halloween decorations in the market. But no homes stay without a spooky touch on this night of the year.
- Carving out pumpkins on and before the holiday is one of the choicest Halloween customs and traditions. Young and old enjoy carving out whacky pumpkin faces all alike. Pumpkin-carving contests are also held at some places.
- Halloween parties ! Yes, that’s again a tradition to throw a party on Halloween or be in one. Staying in the spirit of the fun-night is on the charts and hence the raving, ranting and celebrating till one drops ‘dead’ ! Most people love to get freaked out in Halloween parties with friends and family or go out having a fling anywhere where the party-mood rules. Halloween special games are one important feature of these parties.
- Following the Celtic belief that the souls of dead ancestors resided in black cats, people hold these creatures ominous. Black cats are avoided on Halloween by the Americans. But the English holds exactly the opposite. White cats are considered bad luck in England instead of the usual black ones.
