| DIWALI DECORATIONS
Diwali is one of the most glamorous and important festivals of Hindus which
touches each and every sphere of life. Diwali celebration in India is very
similar to the celebration on Christmas in US. Bursting the crackers, buying new
clothes, cooking special dishes, giving
gifts and of course decorating the home with brilliant and vibrant
decorative items is the quintessential tradition of Diwali celebration.
The most common and traditional way of decorating your home on Diwali is to
light up tiny clay lamps, called
diyas. The word Deepavali means row of lights, hence decorating your
home with rows of diyas sets the mood for celebration. The soft flickering light
emitting from the diyas create a sacred yet festive ambience. Gone are the days
when there was only the option of choosing clay diyas made by potters. Nowadays,
designer
diyas are in
vogue. Wax filled diyas, aromatic diyas or diyas in innovative shapes can be
used to light up your home in more imaginative ways.
Just like the diyas,
candles are also an indispensable item when in comes to Diwali decoration. Over
the time candles have also gone through significant transformation in terms of
its shape, make and design. Colored candles in various shapes and sizes as well
as aromatic candles are all the rage these days. To create a serene and charming
Diwali decoration you can float small colored candles in a glass pot filled with
water and decorate it with brilliantly colored flower petals.
One of the most beautiful
and artistically decorative items for Diwali decoration is the hand made door
hangings. These are used to embellish the front door of the house and also the
room selected to worship Lakshmi, the Goddess on wealth and prosperity. The door
hangings are generally hand crafted and adorned with embroidery, mirrors,
shells, beads, images of lord Ganesha. This Diwali decoration lends a magical
and blissful touch to your home and emphasizes the sublime yet
joyous occasion of
Diwali.
The plate, on which the
various accessories related to worship are placed, is called Puja Thali.
Therefore it is one of the most significant items during Diwali celebration and
much thought is given to decorate this puja thali. Decorating a puja thali can
be a simple yet gratifying job. You can place beetle leaves on the thali to
make it look green or you can cover the plate with petals of marigold flower or
rose petals to give it a more vibrant look. Different religious motifs and small rangoli
patterns can also be drawn on the plate to express the devoutness and reverence
towards God.
Diwali decoration is
almost synonymous with rangoli.
Rangoli
is the custom of decorating the floor or wall with intricate and artistic design
and patterns by using colored powder and colored paste. This is very similar to
graffiti but much more artistic and entirely spiritual. People decorate there
home or temple on Diwali by drawing rangoli on the wall or floor. Mainly the
entrance of the home and the rooms as well as the place of worship is decorated
by drawing rangolis.
Rangoli
decorations are drawn by a mix of vermillion powder, turmeric powder, rice
grains, chalk etc. The beauty of the rangolis can even be enhanced by adding
decorative pieces like diya and flower petals. Drawing
rangoli
patterns and designs are restricted only by your imagination, though the
traditional motifs predominate but rangolis can be the ideal way to show off
your artistic skills while celebrating Diwali !
