Originally, practical jokes on April Fools' Day were a one on one pranksters' fun, but for quite some time now, the media has been in the driver's seat, and here are some of the famous April Fools' Day hoaxes that really got people confounded for a while:
The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest: One of the earlier April Fools' Day hoaxes pulled by the media was in 1957 when the BBC news show Panorama announced on April Fools' Day, that thanks to a very mild winter, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. There was footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. Viewers were taken in, and many 'April Fools' called up wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti trees !
Instant Color TV: In 1962, there was only one TV channel in Sweden and it broadcast in black and white. On April Fools' Day, the station's technical expert announced a newly developed technology that would enable all viewers to easily convert their existing sets to display color reception. All they had to do was pull a nylon stocking over their TV screen and watch their favorite shows in color ! There were thousands of 'April Fools' in Sweden that day !
I'm floating, are you ? In 1976 the British astronomer Patrick Moore announced on BBC Radio 2 that at 9:47 AM on April Fools' Day, a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event would occur and that listeners could experience it in their very own homes. The planet Pluto would pass behind Jupiter, temporarily causing a gravitational alignment that would counteract and lessen the Earth's own gravity. Moore told his listeners that if they jumped in the air at the exact moment of this planetary alignment, they would experience a strange floating sensation. When 9:47 AM arrived, they began to receive hundreds of phone calls from listeners claiming to have felt the sensation ! Can you beat that ? Ever heard of the flying April Fools ?
